md02geist Posted December 7, 2016 Report Posted December 7, 2016 Hello all, I am wondering if anyone has a katana by the naminohira school for sale? Anything kamakura to late Muromachi is fine. Decent condition is preferred, non fatal flaws are fine if blade is priced appropriately and fatal flaws not preferred unless it's a complete steal. I will be using this for aesthetic enjoyment and study purposes. Papered would be wonderful. Thank you! Quote

md02geist Posted December 8, 2016 Author Report Posted December 8, 2016 Thank you, I saw that one. I appreciate you pointing it out to me however. Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted December 8, 2016 Report Posted December 8, 2016 What is your price range and do you have some specific preferences? I think there are multiple swords of this school listed by various dealers in Japan. I unfortunately don't have a blade for you but I should be able to maybe link few. Quote

I hadn't considered an exact price range, it would truly depend on the blade. I've found a few on various dealer sites as well but nothing that has really grabbed me. Quote
md02geist Posted December 27, 2016 Author Report Posted December 27, 2016 I am still looking, thank you. Quote

Peter Bleed Posted February 3, 2017 Report Posted February 3, 2017 Neither of these swords would be - - ahhh, what I'd think of as text book examples of Naminohira. Am i expecting too much ayasugi hada? Peter Quote
md02geist Posted February 3, 2017 Author Report Posted February 3, 2017 Neither of these swords would be - - ahhh, what I'd think of as text book examples of Naminohira. Am i expecting too much ayasugi hada? Peter I think so. Ayasugi hada is found only in some early Naminohira and only partial ayasugi. It isn't wild and full like Gassan. At least, this is how I understand it. Quote
md02geist Posted February 3, 2017 Author Report Posted February 3, 2017 http://www.toukenkomachi.com/index_en_tachi&katanaA140114.html Thank you very much for that link; not quite what I'm looking for. I do appreciate it however. It's a nice one but feels overpriced. Ofc maybe I'm off base we all know something is worth whatever someone will pay for it lol. Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted February 4, 2017 Report Posted February 4, 2017 I did my routine check of many Japanese dealers today and I thought I'd keep an eye out for Naminohira for you. Here are 4 examples. The 2 middle ones are in my opinion the most interesting of the bunch. Naminohira Yasunashi: http://www.nipponto.co.jp/swords3/KT325453.htm(signed, dated, papered) Ko-Naminohira http://kimuratouken.com/01-287.html(papered tachi) Naminohira http://n-kosen.com/katana/A2756.html(papered mumei, very small slender sword with lot curve) Naminohira http://toyuukai.com/2016/09/%e6%b3%a2%e5%b9%b3%ef%bc%88%e8%96%a9%e6%91%a9%ef%bc%89/(papered mumei) 1 Quote
md02geist Posted February 4, 2017 Author Report Posted February 4, 2017 thank you very much Jussi! Quite an interesting selection there. Look at the sori on that third one! Wild! Quote

Ray Singer Posted April 21, 2017 Report Posted April 21, 2017 Rob, newly listed for sale. http://www.nihontoantiques.com/project/naminohira-daito-sword-fss-737/ 1 Quote
Red Sun Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 That one at Nihontoantiques is fantastic - even the nakago alone looks like it would have some stories to tell! There is another one with a very nice write up at ryujin swords.... http://www.ryujinswords.com/konaminohira.htm Quote
Ray Singer Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 The offer on that Ko-Naminohira is currently £13,000. Note that I am making no judgement about where the offer stands, just relaying the information that they posted on Facebook on April 18th. https://www.facebook.com/Ryujinswords There is another one with a very nice write up at ryujin swords.... http://www.ryujinswords.com/konaminohira.htm Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted April 24, 2017 Report Posted April 24, 2017 I've kept my eye on the one at Ryujinswords ever since it came up. That tachi blade is something I love but unfortunately for me it has the koshirae. As it is "total package" it pushes it much further from my grasp, and nobody wants to break a set like that. Well wouldn't have money for it in few years either way... I would love to read more about the blade itself but feels like in this the koshirae is a major selling point. Even though I am usually a fan of Naminohira swords I personally am not attracted to the one at Nihontoantiques. Well I am extremely picky with my taste. Quote
