And more so, from a post I made a couple years ago, including some examples of a 1937 cold-weather aratameshi organized by the publisher of Token Kogei (Sword Industry) magazine Omura Kunitaro, at the request of the Japanese Army, who was losing a lot of blades to the Manchurian winter.  Links to source material included in the article.

Sad for the loss of potential art swords; however, when the sword is considered as a critical tool, it is important to know the limitations of the weapon and analyze the forging and heat treatment for potential improvements.
