An excellent mumei shin-shinto tanto with two sets of papers.

The tanto is in fine polish and good condition without problems or serious flaws. There is one small kitae ware and also pitting near the mune on one side (this is clearly visible in the photos).

It has an excellent itame jigane, mixed in with areas of running itame, particularly near the kissaki. The hamon is a nioi based choji midare, slightly saka choji in places. There is also a clear utsuri visible (hard to see on photos).

1. Paper by Shibata Mitsu which attributes the piece to Yamon Naokatsu (Taikei Naotane school).

From Sesko:

NAOKATSU (直勝), 2nd gen., Keiō (慶応, 1865-1868), Musashi – “Shōji Yamon Naokatsu” (荘司弥門直勝), Naokatsu(直勝), “Shōji Yamon Fujiwara Naokatsu” (荘司弥門藤原直勝), real name Shōji Yamon (荘司弥門), son of the 1st gen. Naokatsu, he was born in the sixth year of Tenpō (天保, 1835) and signed in early years with Naoyoshi (直好), the name change to Naokatsu took place in the second year of Bunkyū (文久, 1862), that means actually four years after the death of his father, he died on the 31st day of the third month Meiji 17 (明治, 1884) at the age of 50, we know date signatures from the sixth year of Ansei (安政, 1859) to the fourth year of Meiji (1871), his blades have a wide mihaba and a relative large kissaki, the jigane looks soft and the hamon is a kataochi-gunome, a slanting ko-chōji-midare, or a suguha in the Yamashiro tradition, the nioiguchi is not that bright but rather subdued, some works look therefore like tired kotō blades, chūjō-saku

2. NTHK Yoshikawa Papers to the Aizu Michitoki school dated to around the Bunkyo period (1861-1864).

Nagasa 29.5cm

The tanto is in a shirasaya with copper habaki.

I would be inclined to believe the paper by Shibata is the correct attribution. He is well known for his high level of expertise on shin-shinto swords and the workmanship in this tanto does seem consistent for Yamon Naokatsu.
