The Problem Of Shipping Japanese Sword Out From Japan

Recommended Posts

We are having problem that shipping the sword out from Japan to some countries in Europe.

EMS Japan started to refuse handling Japanese sword that shipping to the Netherlands one or two years ago.
In this year, we found out that they don't ship to (at least) the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Lithuania.... with official export permission.
We asked JP Post office (EMS). They said that they take Japanese sword if they have official export license, but some of carrier companies which have contract with refuses handling "sword".
They said that they can ship to England, Germany, (maybe France) in Europe, USA and Canada are no problem.
Just depend on the rule of the contract carrier companies (air lines).
This problem is caused by privatising post office and terrorism security issue said JP post.
so, we were using FedEx.
but a couple month ago, FedEx Japan stopped handling the Japanese sword, DHL Japan doesn't handle them either.
Now we have problem....

I would like to ask member here who receiving swords from Japan, how your situation is.
How did you receive sword from Japan ? EMS, FedEx or other Carrier ?
Please share your shipping experiences.

and now, we are thinking about finding a agent in England or Germany to transfer our shipping from Japan to Europe for our polishing service in Japan.
If some NMB member who located in England or Germany are interested in helping us, please PM me.

Thank you for your post Christian san,

It is not Custom or value problem.
It is depend on the Carrier company's policy who have contract with JP Post(EMS).
That is what JP post said.

and Yes, FedEx Japan stopped handling swords, I confirmed it a couple month ago.

FedEx and DHL in the netherlands are not handing Japanese sword either.

heyas,

For Norway, FedEx must be used according to Japanese online sellers, so same situation here.

Strangely enough, they will carry all manner of copy and replica swords, or so I am told. It is a strange and unfortunate situation....
