docliss Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 I have read somewhere that if a pair of fuchi-gashira are so disproportionate in size that the kashira will fit inside the fuchi, this precludes their being a true pair. I have such a pair that appear to belong together, and wonder if their difference is size negates this. Your thoughts on this dilemma will be very welcome. John L. Quote
Brian Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 Hmm..I've found that the kashira is usually just small enough to almost fit into the fuchi, or close to it. If they are the same size, usually they are not a pair? This just from the few that I have here. I will have to measure a few of my swords to get a closer assumption, but depending on the style, I would not rule the pairing out. What are the others' obsevations on this? Brian Quote

I have kashira that fits into the fuchi and they definitely belong to each other ( same design, same metal, same background etc etc ). milt the ronin Quote

kusunokimasahige Posted August 5, 2007 Report Posted August 5, 2007 I think it all depends on the Tsuka size Samurai preferred...... since it was almost always comissioned work..... KM Quote

Hi, does this only refer to a Fuchi/Kashira set of a Daito? I could imagine that a F/K for a small Wakizashi or Tanto (with a much shorter Tsuka) doesn´t comply with these conditions. cheers, Martin Quote
Pete Klein Posted August 5, 2007 Report Posted August 5, 2007 Martin -- I was thinking along your lline on this. I have a set where the kashira is quite a bit smaller than the fuchi and I am thinking that possibly these were for aikuchi mounts of tanto, possibly smaller womens mounts, where the tsuka would be smaller for a woman's grip. Just a thought but the geometry would work. I couldn't find any uchigatana koshirae where this was the case. Quote
