The phrase refers to not draw the sword without reason and not sheathe the sword without honor.

That phrase has been used by many countries throughout history. I have it on a pre-1900 English bowie knife.

Not sure what the Japanese equivalent would be.

It really can be difficult but it is a wise and with a sense phrase.

It has always called my attention when I saw a piece.

It's a shame not to find an easy translation in Japanese with the same meaning.
