JPGH Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 Hello everyone, Sorry to bother you all. I was told by another forum to come here and see if there is a 'Nobody or Mr. Morita' who can possibly help me translate the attached marks. They're on the base of an antique lacquered Japanese box. Can some please help? I've been trying for what seems like forever to ID the marks, but to no avail. Can you help? Kind regards, JoJo Quote
k morita Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 Hi, " Satō " is the most general family name in Japan. Quote
JPGH Posted April 18, 2014 Author Report Posted April 18, 2014 Hi, Thank you so much, Mr Morita, for helping with the translation. I'll research the translation and hopefully I will be able to find something. I doubt it, but worth the try. Again, thank you! Quote
JPGH Posted April 18, 2014 Author Report Posted April 18, 2014 Below is another interesting piece of lacquer I purchased locally. After a bit of digging, I'm afraid I haven't found much of anything on it as far as style. It appears to be a Odawara-chochin, but I haven't been able to find another "lacquer & copper" example such as this one. I did find a nice read on the history of Odawara-chochin as seen in the link below. I also found within this site (This Week's Edo Period Corner, page 117) a poster (estcrh) posted some images of his pair of chochin with a similar clover symbol that's seen on my lantern. http://ashigaranet.com/english/eng20120322-01.html I was wondering if someone could please help find another example of a lacquered chochin and/or help translate the inscriptions on the paper??? Is this lantern Edo Period as well? Below are some images for your viewing. Thanks again for taking the time out to help. Kind regards Quote
k morita Posted April 18, 2014 Report Posted April 18, 2014 Nice chochin ! Meaning of ”goshinto“: A lantern in the doorway of a house that is dedicated to gods providing happiness , called 'goshinto' ... Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 19, 2014 Report Posted April 19, 2014 Wow, yes, very nice chochin. Now you are making me envious! Thanks for posting. Quote
