Christophe Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 Hi, I need advice about a naginata ( with NTHK paper) that I bought Wednesday in a small antiques market. There has scars on one shinogi (?). Didt you think I can keep it like that? or some rust may appear? Thank you in advance for your advice and help. Christophe Quote
Marius Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 Christophe, there is no need to do anything, just make sure the blade is stored correctly (apply a thin coat of choji oil if necessary). The scars you are referring to (best visible in the second picture) are shinae: http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/flaws.html Quote
Stephen Posted August 15, 2013 Report Posted August 15, 2013 On the other hand, there is a similar appearance called "mukade-shinae". It appears in blade surface like wrinkles, not cracks. It is not a flaw. When a blade is hardly bent and straighten again, it appears on the blade surface. It is very thin wrinkles on the steel surface, so it can be removed by sometimes polishing. from same page scrool down a bit, looks like a bent blade then straightend Quote
Christophe Posted August 15, 2013 Author Report Posted August 15, 2013 Thanks Stephen, I will store it correctly after applying a thin coat of choji oil. It's still dificult for me to make difference between shinae and mukade-shinae. I ned to study more and more. Thanks again. Christophe Quote
remzy Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Am i the only one to think there is something wrong with the shinogiji? aside from the wrinkles... Are both side of the blade identical in shape? Regards, Quote
Christophe Posted August 16, 2013 Author Report Posted August 16, 2013 "Am i the only one to think there is something wrong with the shinogiji?" Can you be more specific? The both side of the blade have the same shape Christophe Quote
remzy Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 I hesitate to speculate based on (no insult meant) poor photos quality. It has led me to blunder in the past... but generally speaking, the sugata is forged by the smith, yours look like it has been altered, unless that is uncommon sugata that i have never seen before, since i am no way near being an expert on the matter, i could be wrong. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... lade_5.jpg See how the shinogigi gets thinner after the hi on the picture and flows towards the boshi, keeping the width of the shinogiji constant towards the point. That is what i meant, *BUT* maybe its just me imagining things. Regards, Quote
Lance Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 I highlighted the part of the shinogii I thought you might be referring to on Christophe's Naginata, I'm guessing it's just an odd reflection and it doesn't dip down that way? Regards, Lance Quote
remzy Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Indeed, that is where i am talking about. Quote
