They are just a variation offered by one of the many manufacturer/supplier/mounting shops who fitted up swords or offered "ready made" swords to officers. I have attached no great significance to them, but some militaria collectors pay huge amounts to get a sword with this fitting regardless of the quality of the blade....I understand from this that it is really a "militaria" thing rather than a nihonto thing...to each his own.
