Children's toy??

I recently purchased this fuchi kashira and was wondering what the object is that the Shishi are playing with. Is it a children's toy, a drum or something else? The ropes made me think of a drum or incense container from a shrine or temple.

Could it be a drawstring kinchaku purse, and they have pulled the elaborate knot undone?
