Jean Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 One of my friend would like to know what is the name of this kind of lacquer which can be found on YARI/Naginata koshirae. Quote
kunitaro Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 I think it is kind of "Inden Shibori"-nuri or "shibo-nuri". we often see it Yari's Saya. It is stamped with squeezed leather or cotton just before the lacquer gets dry. It could be layered and polished as well. Quote
NihontoEurope Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 Hi-Jack in progress... Which type of paint should be used? I'm guessing not to use water based and preferably oil based. Since I do not know I have to ask. /Martin Quote
cabowen Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 It is lacquer not regular paint. Quote
Jean Posted November 3, 2012 Author Report Posted November 3, 2012 Red and black lacquer are often used on yari/naginata grooves olso on some horimonos. I remember a tanto signed "soshu ju sukehiro" with a so no kurikara horimono which was black lacquered. Quote

NihontoEurope Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 Ok thanks! I have a few Yari and Naginata that are lacquered. This one is a Naginata that I would like to fix it up for display. I have not given this any thought, paint or lacquer, until yesterday when I took it out from its resting place. I thought it was plain paint I'll try to get a hold of some lacquer to fix it. Thanks all /Martin Quote
