  1. With all the bad press ebay gets I just wanted to show that for those that are watching carefully ebay has some buried treasure, I purchased this armor on ebay a while back, This is from my collection and was purchased from and certified by one of the worlds leading authorities on samurai armor to be a complete matched set of non-restored early 1600s Hosokawa clan full suit of armor in the Etchu style. It features Etchu style zunari helmet or kabuto and a real Iyozane maru dou or chest armor, Iyozane is true individual large scales (around 100) and maru means the dou is constructed in 1 piece with no hinge, the wearer just pulls it open to wear it, the hanpo or face mask is Etchu style low cut with a black interior found on older armors instead of the red lacquer found on armors made later in the 1600s and on. The sangu or arm, thigh and shin armor are in Etchu style, the thigh guards or haidate and the kote or arm guards are made of small shino plates and so-gusari chainmail and the suneate or shin guards are made from small shino plates with NO cloth backing which is accurate for this style. This armor is a well preserved piece of history http://s831.photobucket.com/albums/zz23 ... f%20armor/
  2. So there are good blades hidden inside some of there sword canes after all.
  3. Sorry, you said you were interested in buying it which is why I wrote my post. As long as the seller does not say...antique...vintage.etc..I am ok with it. but when there is an attempt to deceive........then I have a problem with the Chinese replicas. No one should knowingly buy from a seller who is misrepresenting what they sell!!!!
  4. You have to take into account that there might be an reason for these weapons that is lost to us, someone who could not legally carry a sword perhaps? I know there were rules and restrictions at various times but why would someone go to so much trouble for a ....novelty...???
  5. Well dont just tell us about it....pictures????...its much harder to find pictures of the more unusual types of weapons than swords.
  6. Thanks for the link, I never saw this site before.
  7. I finally got to take some more pictures. It looks like the saya was made for this yari, but the saya is much longer than needed? There is no Kozuka/Kogai, from the tsuba to the point is 9in.
  8. If you look close you will see a...damascus... pattern in the hamon...a sure sign of a chinese fake. Maybe some sort of chemical treatment ...acid?...to get an artificial temper. I have only seen one seller in China who carries anything but fakes, and this one guy buys from yahoo Japan and resells, other than that I have one authentic antique come from china let alone a sword, and the junk always looks better in a picture than in your hand. I know, I one bought a Chinese fake, from an American no less, he got burned and he passed it on to me. Taught me a valuable lesson.
  9. I have always read that Japanese sword canes had junk blades, I purchased this one thinking that was the case, but I have always wondered what was under the tarnish, the blade is quite sharp. The koshirae is well disguised and you cant tell that it is really a sword. http://s831.photobucket.com/albums/zz238/estcrh/Antique%20Japanese%20sword%20cane/
  10. Thats good, just didnt want anyone to get stuck, I just read on another forum were a member paid almost $300 dollars for "antique Edo period shuriken" only to find out they had the same look as the replica sasumata, hard to get a refund from Japan. Almost as bad as China sometimes.
  11. Close up of Daimyou's replica sasumata http://daimyou51jp.web.infoseek.co.jp/G4-252/IMG_2034.JPG] see the texture and color..its all wrong..and no wear..obvious replica.
  12. This is a replica, while Daimyou does carry authentic samurai antiques he at the same time carries vintage and replica items, you need to watch his descriptions very carefully as he would have listed it as Edo period and started it at a much higher price, if you go to his close up pics you will see the rather obvious tell tail signs of a replica, first...no wear...second...no wear...third...no wear...look carefully at the metal....that is not the natural look of rust on a real Edo period item...its to fine and smooth and the color is off...watch his items for a while and you will see the same ones appear over and over..all with the same color and textured metal pieces. I have purchased a few of his replica items for research and I will post some pics of his replicas compared to real antique iron. Replica ninja style weapons from Daimyou Antique iron climbing tools

  14. Trust me on this, that is a replica, I can assure you.
  15. Another interesting yari, http://www.japanauctioncenter.com/view2.php?seturl=http://page2.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b107653427
  16. I have never seen this type of yari before, here is another picture i found after a google search,
  17. Here is another style of sasumata head, your not going to see many of these around in the US, even in Japan they are not near as common as sodegarami. The shipping cost for this type of tall pole weapon is very expensive, I recently purchased one in Japan and the shipping cost was more than the cost of the sasumata! http://s831.photobucket.com/albums/zz238/estcrh/samurai%20sasumata%20Edo%20period%20police%20weapon/
  18. Eric, are you saying that the shaft had more than one hole in it or that there was no hole for the yari and it was just set in the shaft? its a nice shaped yari.
  19. Brian, your quite right it is a more brutish sort of a weapon, everyone sees things in a different way, its like swords, some people only like brand new polished blades while I can also enjoy swords that look like they did their job and show that they were used. I enjoy all types of samurai items from swords to armor to their clothes, some people only like swords, to each his own.
  20. I believe the pole arms are a sodegarami and a sasumata, I would still like to see those.
  21. Barry, thanks for the information, that was just what I was looking for. How would someone contact him if they were interested in his services?
  22. John, I do not understand your attitude, my question has nothing to do with matters of money or sales and there is NOTHING crass about it, I asked a simple question, there is NOTHING crass about someone wanting to have a mei checked and not wanting to do it themselves, your horse is rather high, that may be part of the joy to you but not to someone else, to each his own. Some people would rather not impose on other people and do not mind paying for services rendered, you do not understand that? "a place of learning and not a commercial clearing house" WOW.....sounds like your worshiping in church! You are a rude individual
  23. Yes of course, and I myself have asked once for help and received it for a sword of mine which I appreciated but what I was asking about was if there was a commercial service that translates mei. I have never heard of one, but some people would rather pay for services, and for someone who is looking to purchase a sword lets say and wants to verify the sellers translation independently and would just like to send a picture of the mei and pay for a translation is there such a service? Has anyone heard of this being done?
  24. That is an awesome weapon, must be quite heavy, I have seen a picture of one in a shira-saya but not mounted like that. Do you know how old it is?
  25. Piers, I will post soon, that is a beauty..I really like the more unusual weapons..that triangle shape would make a horrible wound, sort of like the ww1 trench triangle trench knife, I believe that shape is banned in military knifes by convention as being to inhumane.
