    Yes, Ron you are correct. That is a police sword. The few I have seen have been late war.

    The nakago shots of the date are a little blurry. Looks like it might be 1942. Does the FB post confirm the date?

    The mounts are late-war/civilian. I did not capture a clear photo of the tsuba, but it is a non-military tsuba of lower quality.

    USMC and was in Nagasaki in 1945. Here’s a picture of the blade. It has a 67.3cm nagasa.

    @John C Thanks for the tip on the field grade ranks. That was the start of the writing on the tag. I found that Sasebo is a city in Nagasaki Prefecture. Nagasaki is where my neighbor’s father acquired the sword.

    Greetings, This evening, I had the opportunity to examine a sword that belongs to my neighbor. His father brought it back from WW2.The blade is in rough shape. It’s suriage with bohi. I took careful measurements and will post additional photos in the Nihonto section. Any help with the mei and surrender tag would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    What does the blade look like? The post-war souvenir swords sometimes had green tsuka Ito. The scabbard is genuine, but the handle may be rewrapped in this example.

    Pretty rough shape, but it has threaded sakura and a hole in the same for a mekugi. Someone thinks they can clean up the verdigris apparently.

    The pictures of the blade are not the best, but I don’t see anything in the listing that makes me think this is a reproduction. Just look at the wear on the wire and the grip. It does look like the brass on the handle was cleaned. The patina looks a little off.

    I think it’s 三午年, which is Meiji 3 year of the horse (1870).

    The sword listed is in Japan. The term “replica” is used to satisfy their laws. Oftentimes, even these dress blades have been cut by authorities.

    Nice find! I assume those numbers are for assembly purposes. I’ve seen katakana and Arabic numerals used too and on the ricasso sometimes.

    Hi Tristan, That’s a Navy sword knot. It’s a nicer quality bullion one. I believe these style were junior grade officer knots.

    The blade is genuine. There is nothing wrong with the nakago either. Can you post a better close up of the scabbard?

    Hi Ronnie, Your son’s sword is a Model 1883 Navy Officer’s sword. These saw service through WW2. A fairly common sword, but less common than the Army equivalent dress swords.

    Yes, it’s an acid etched blade. Sometimes blades like this are encountered with bohi in Kyu Gunto mounts. I have a similar example in good condition early type 94 mounts. Mine is devoid of any markings on the nakago. It’s nice to see another example.

    Trystan, do you interpret the advertisement to mean that they can mount (blades) as command swords or gunto? Or that they manufacture command swords and gunto? Otherwise, what’s considered an adjustment?

    Found this example of the Hyakuren hotstamp here: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1156337462 I am not sure of the smith. Looks like Takahashi Kane(yuki?). Didn’t find a match in Sesko or on the forum. There’s a seki stamp above the mei.

    Correct. It should go over the fuchi. Because it's brittle leather I didn’t want to move it around and just left it how I received it.

    Here’s the sword I picked up. It has a wood saya with a Type 98 haikan.
