Hi all Thanks for interest, I might as well be looking in a bush as seeing what is a nice sword or not so I appreciate the help. I collect Indian swords and imperial German bayonets but I liked the look of this sword. Amazing to think it is so old and in relative good condition. It does look like paper that is atached to the tsuba alright, but I will not try and remove so don’t worry. I have taken some more pictures you can see the few delaminations and the chip in the blade, it was this damage that enabled me to talk down the price There was. No peg in the handle either just a brass screw. What I can see of scabard neck looks nice as well but it is covered in a leather outer scabbard which is laced closed, I think if I tried to open the lace it would tear. Might there be anything of interest under the leather. All the best Ken Ps an officers type 98 sword came in the same job lot but it is a standard enough piece so I do not think it will add much to the discussion

Hi Geraint, Grey Thanks for information I will do nothing with the sword WRT cleaning, rest assured! I will try and get better pictures tonight, hard to photograph with the i pad without a glare on the blade The tsuba is 75mm in diameter by the way Are there any specific areas that need to be photographed to help with identification? Any idea on age of the sword? Regards, ken

Hi I just got this Wakizashi in a job lot of swords I know nothing at all really about it I am not into it for much cash so no need to hold back on the comments if it’s all bad news. The scabard is leather covered timber and there is a stud fastener to stop sword falling out, half popper is missing though 20 inch blade with a chip but it is not too deep, 2 mm or so . Blade has visible hamon for the full length not sure if it will show in pictures Blade is in ok condition with some discoloration The tang does have a signature but I think it has been cut at some stage in its life There is a mark on the tsuba which is quiet clear hopefully I have photographed it right way round Any chance the tang markings can tell you anything or the markings on the tsuba I would love to have an approximate period of manafacture. Kind regards and if any more pictures would help let me know Ken

Hi Thanks for interest Here are pictures of the habaki off Hopefully the tell more information Regards Ken

Thank you both for time taken to reply The flaw is only on one side of the blade, I will be adding the sword to my own collection as an interesting item to me either way but I am happy that the flaw does not seem to be fatal. An amazingly complex hobby and a steep learning curve for beginners but I can definitely see the attraction of collecting Nihonto Much appreciated from r sharing your knowledge Regards Ken

All depends on angles, to me in hand it looks like a glancing strike.Looking at the missing part of the sacabbard this would look like a glance strike as well Do people concur with the mid shinto as the age period of the sword? Thanks Ken

Hello all I recently purchased the attached Wakizashi, no story at all came with the item so I am hoping someone here could give me some information. I know very little so I will probably give some of the terms for components and parts incorrect. Apologies for this. Wakizashi In question is 22 inch long and is in a WWII military scabbard What makes it perhaps interesting is the bullet hole through the scabbard which has dented and I also assume ruined the blade. The scabbard also has been on fire with around 3 inches burned through. Other than the obvious crack in the blade the sword is in otherwise ok condition. With not much damage where the fire occurred and no obvious to me, damage. The hamon is just showing through in places but the blade does not look to be abused, it was covered in grime and grease when I got it which I cleaned off with ethanol soakings and otherwise have not touched it. The nakago has 3 holes in it which I take to imply blade has some age to it. The handle has a nice Menuki On it but some of the tape binding is missing. There is no makings at all on the nakago just some file marks. There was no tsuba on the sword and just leather washers in leather its place, these are on it from WWII I assume as the rust surrounding the washers is engrained into them. I feel the leather washers might have been put on the sword to enhance its quick draw. Might this be correct? The fuchi is quiet decorative but the Kashira is missing If I might ask what age might this sword be and could anyone give me any information or point me in the right direction to find out more. To a true nihono collector it probably holds no real interest but I like it for what it is I am taking pictures on an I pad so sorry in advance for this and if further images might help ask away. Regards and thanks Ken

Hi I just purchased the following Wakizashi as part of a job lot in an auction. I wanted some of the ethnographic knives and this sword came as part of the lot. It is a nothing sword when compared to what I see on this forum so I apologise in advance. I know it is what is know as a satsuma rebellion Wakizashi Of no great interest to true Japanese sword collectors it's 18 inch blade in terrible condition and worth practically nothing. The tsuba seems of. Reasonable quantity though. My question is on the two grey items tucked under the binding of the handle, Are these items of any interest or significance to previous owner. The material feels very abrasive and I think brittle but I am only assuming this as I obviously do not want to push the matter. One of them has a small hole drilled or punched in it. I appreciate any answers or corrections on the assumptions I have made in my opening paragraph. I will probably never be much of an asset to this forum but thanks for opertunity to ask questions on what I have The item cost me nothing and it probably has made me money in education of the ever so complex world of Nihonto Kind regards Ken I have another Wakizashi with some questions but I do not want to ask too much on my first post.
