  1. Hello there, I searched the topics for a thread concerning Japanese military sword books but couldn't find anything currrent or quite what I was after. I currently have the two quintessential (IMHO) books by Fuller and Gregory: Military Swords of Japan 1868-1945 Japanese Military and Civil Swords and Dirks Are there other books along similar lines that are worth having? I have re-read those several times and would like more reading material. I'd like to stick to military theme, more reference than narrative (though both work).
  2. Good morning/afternoon all, I jumped the gun a little and posted a question without a proper introduction. A little about myself: Australian, I have been collecting IJA militaria with a focus on swords for approx 4 years. I have a love of history and military, so you can guess where that led me. I think I was attracted to Japanese because it seemed to be a less saturated group, with Germany, GB and the US being well represented. I also find the stories of Japanese bravery quite inspiring, not to mention the profound respect I have for a society that strives so highly for perfection. That someone will dedicate their life to learning and mastery is something to hold in awe. Swords are a good reminder of these qualities and I love knowing that there are literally hundreds of thousands of variations, minor as some may be. The fact that the Japanese actively saw these as 'weapons' is interesting, in an era where the gun had made these archaic implements of war obsolete. That these swords can be a priceless work of art to... what's not to love? I must confess that While I can certainly appreciate and would love to own an 'art sword', I actually have a FAR greater interest in the military swords. These are what I love and an amazing reminder of different times. I feel no need to specifically collect pristine examples. My favorites are all swords that one would believe saw action, or have some sort of personalisation. I desire a 'leather covered' sword above a pristine Type 98. Call me odd. One day I hope to have a collection worthy enough to donate to a museum. I collect these swords with a passion borderline obsessive, but the good news is I take very good care of them and always handle with respect. I'm here to learn and share my thoughts with likeminded individuals. Advice, assistance and the odd rebuke are all welcome and encouraged. Hope to see you around.
  3. I'm embarrassed to admit I thought of that 1 minute after posting. I actually have that book to, plus their later and more complete reference.
  4. Apologies for my ignorance, who or what is/are F&G?
  5. Thanks you so much Grey. That is a big relief. My instincts said yes, but the poor quality fittings made me doubt, since Japanese craftsmanship is usually so stringent. It also happens to be my favorite sword. NCO... I'm also not certain, but again it shows all the right signs of age and is consistent with my other 95's in scale and wear.
  6. Good morning/evening all, The dreaded question that I'm sure bothers us all at some stage.... real or fake/repro. I have been collecting IJA Sword for a few years now. I make no claim to be an expert and freely admit I bought before I read the books. Having said that, I can tell the difference between most fake/repro I see floating around. There are a few items though that I am just not sure about. My experience is limited, so I hope the good folk here may be able to assist. There are two swords in question. The first was sold as a very late war Type 98 Officers Sword. The fittings are all very low quality and were I to see the sword now I would be wary. However, it also displays all the correct signs of age and has a curious sticker on the saya, where the combat cover has worn away. The blade is also seemingly well made and correct. Having read Military Swords of Japan, I'm currently undecided on this one. Secondly a side locking Type 95, purchased from a seller that has been called 'quality' on this very site andsaid to have 35 years of experience. I also very much trust the gent, though I have no doubt he does neglect minor aspects of some of his sales. The hilt here is a lower quality casting and the serial stamping is not the nice deep rolled kind as on my other 95's. I had his assurance it is authentic, plus it has been said that the Chinese do not fake a lot of the side lock. From the US. I know that centers varied somewhat in manufacturing. Opinions welcomed and encouraged please. I have a lot to learn, so please help me here with these two unknowns. Photo coming!
