    Two unusual tanto

Strange, the first one reminds me of counter shortened blade, obviously not though...
  2. "I talked him into selling it through paypal and showed him step by step how to do it" Trent, make sure you have an accurate description in writing, otherwise could end up in a dispute.
  3. If I remember correctly, if a seller doesn't sell too often, has a low seller score or is new to Ebay, doesn't Ebay hold the money for 30 days? (think its 30 days, may be less). If you have sent him the money via paypal, will he not have access to the funds immediately?
  4. 30x with an LED, 60x maybe?, might look into buying a new one. John, "art magnifier", as you say, maybe similar to a close range monocular, posh term maybe .
  5. Cheers for the clarification Chris, i was under the impression that nioi could not be distinguished individually, even with a magnifying glass, like a mist. I just presumed they where ko-nie as they where clearly individual crystals. A loupe, i see they make some that attach to your glasses, as Denis mentions. That would help with the focusing, difficult to keep the hand steady with the small glass that i own. I was sat against a glass patio door with the sun behind me, so the lighting was good.
  6. I was wondering how common it is for folk to use magnification when studying nihonto. I was looking over a few blades today with an high magnification glass that i use at work, it was very interesting to see the minute martensite crystals that you would never see with the naked eye. One sword in particular, a sword i thought was nioi-deki was packed with ko-nie and ji-nie, details that had gone unnoticed.
  7. I would hang on until you yourself know that the sword is worth a buy, or any other sword for that matter.

    Muromachi Koshirae

Looks great Jean, these older style utilitarian koshirae have a certain appeal, that to me just cant be beat....

    Half a mei

Cheers for the replies guys. Geraint, thats what i was thinking, that maybe someone trimmed the nakago to fit an existing tsuka.

    Half a mei

A good sword, im curious as to why someone would allow half the mei to be lost in this particular way, never seen this before. http://www.aoijapan.com/wakizashi-awata ... -tadatsuna

    Was it a Kodachi?

Im guessinng folk of the time period would have refered to it as ko-dachi. Obviously this would depend on it being shortened at that time.

    Was it a Kodachi?

I see, something i need reminding about now and again, reading through some of the well known introductory books can get one into the habit of overly categorizing, like some kind of rule cop, "sorry sonny, thats no ko-dachi you have there, your 4cm over the legal limit" haha. There are always allowances and exceptions to these rules, it will sink in one day

    Was it a Kodachi?

Blade length for ko-dachi is 60cm or less (so i just read), this is 63.9cm.

  23. Hi Terry, don't take comments to heart, I have a feeling that if you keep the hobby up your take on tsuba will change over the next year or so. If you put an item on the forum its wise to expect a wide range of opinions. One or two folk who have been honest in the past i go back to for advice now, i find there no bull critique educational, but amusing at the same time.
  24. Nice write up Gabriel, just looking over the book now, looks like the ultimate printers nightmare. Blade shots vary from a blueish tone to a green tone (suspect they should all be the same), printer may have got an ass kicking over that job . Still, as far as nihonto book printing quality goes, its way above most that i know, looks like they put some thought, effort and expense into the print side. Apologies for straying Curtis, you got me thinking about photo quality in these books, something thats been on my mind.
