  1. Thanks, I understand your meaning but with all the hundreds of swords I've handled since 1985 you would think I'd have seen at least one other??
  2. Not even 1 single opinion????
  3. Just got a new tanto I bought for the fittings. The blade may not be restorable but I wonder about a mark on the nakago. Does it mean anything? Seems like it was intentional. Thanks for any help, Howard Dennis
  4. Thanks for your response. Any hidden meaning or reference to a legend? I couldn't find anything online and wondered why the artist chose this theme? Howard Dennis
  5. Waiting for latest purchase to arrive and wonder what does this depict? Sorry for poor pictures but they were taken by seller. Thanks for any help, Howard Dennis
  6. Matsunoki, Thank you for that response. The woman who owned this, Fujiko Matsumoto, was desended from Samurai hierarchy and I always thought that had something to do with her love of this but I also know she lost her mother at a very early age and this may have been one of her last connections with her mother. Oh how I wish I had asked more about it's past. Howard Dennis
  7. SteveM, Thanks for your response and very informative link. Howard Dennis
  8. ROKUJURO, Thanks so much for the response. Yes, those are the correct measurements.
  9. Inherited this lacquer box from an elderly Japanese woman years ago. I know she always cherished it and her father was one of the first dealers in the West to sell Japanese antiques so I've always thought this was something special. It measures 2 5/8 inches by 1 1/2 inches. Am I correct in my thought that these are representations of Mons? Any idea of age and possible usage? Thanks in advance for any ideas or thoughts. Howard Dennis
  10. Bought this at local antique mall and would like any information as to age origin what is depicted and anything else I can learn, It measures 12 3/4 inches tall. Thanks in advance for any help, Howard Dennis
  11. Wouldn't it be possible that this one was actually made from a single menuki? Howard Dennis
  12. Here's something you don't see every day! https://www.facebook...85-b24f-8b2bbb1d50fa
  13. Matsunoki and SteveM thanks for your replies, very helpful. Howard Dennis
  14. Thank You. Any idea of age and does anything translate to a price paid when purchased? WWII bring back was mentioned but I'm doubtful it's that old?? Howard Dennis
  15. Thanks to everybody who responded and tried to help me. For some reason the delete option is not available to me and although I was able to delete the first photos I can't edit the original post. Masunoki's suggestion was the best option so here are the new photos. Howard Dennis
  16. They were sent to me and I don't know how to convert them. How do I delete this post? Howard Dennis
  17. Family member asked if I could identify item left to them. Thanks for any help you can give as far as what it is and translation. Howard Dennis IMG_0631_50 (1).heic IMG_0635_50.heic IMG_0633_50.heic IMG_0634_50.heic
  18. Thank You, I thought there might be some other purpose than to fool someone into thinking it was old. Howard Dennis
  19. Thanks Geraint for responding and the link. It was cheaper than a good book and look at all I learn about the culture just because of it. It will also be a good replacement tsuba on a sword being sold rather than let a better tsuba go down the road. Howard Dennis
  20. Found this in local antique mall. It was so cheap I couldn't leave it. It measures 3 1/4 inches x 3 inches and even though labeled bronze it is magnetic and heavy iron. I'm 99% sure it's modern but wonder what it depicts and why was it made? Thanks for any help, Howard Dennis
  21. Thanks again for all the help. To be honest I didn't invest in books about signatures because it was learn about the swords and have enough money leftover to actually buy some OR just own books. So let me see if I'm understanding what you all have posted. In order for the kanji to be Masazane the upper newer hole has to have taken out the righthand side of the bottom horizontal stroke AND the lefthand "foot" stroke. Am I seeing that correctly? Howard Dennis
  22. Thank You all for helping me with this. Does this help in swaying your opinions in the same direction? Howard Dennis
  23. Ray, another site translated this as Masanao. Could this be both or did they make a mistake? Just wondering what direction to go in researching the name. Thanks again, Howard Dennis
  24. Thank You Ray appreciate the help. Howard Dennis
  25. Just acquired this yari and would like to know what the signature says. Howard Dennis
