  1. Gentlemen, I bought a nice closeted gunto at a estate sale the other day, as my nihongo kanji skills are still below average I just want to confirm that this is read as being made by a smith named Fujiwara Yoshimitsu in Seki. It is stamped but looks to have nioi on a probable oil tempered blade. Is that common? Best Regards, Bob
  2. I think so too Stephen, it's ready to go to your workbench, it does have a high wavy gunome hamon. Too bad Mr. Feild didn't take care of it. Best Regards, Bob
  3. Thanks Joe, I've been looking at too many things lately and not writing things down. Best Regards, Bob
  4. Another special for someone who needs something different for the home display. Best Regards, Bob http://www.ebay.com/itm/WW2-Japanese-Police-Katana-Rare-Unique-and-hard-to-find-Imperial-era-sword-/201367612796?ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT
  5. Gents, In case anyone would like a project. I'm not going to tackle it. Best Regards, Bob http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/201367614937?
  6. Too late Ken, I already buffed it out. Just kidding, just had it out to oil it and get some of the fingerprints off. I was looking closely at the discoloration on the nakago where the polish ends. The mune and ha sides look normal there but there is a odd black color on the flats, do not see any obvious signs of a weld or joint just the odd patina between the filing and the polish. Nice hamon, masame had under the patina from what I can see. Thanks for looking, Bob
  7. Fellas, Thanks for the info, I'll take a closer look at it tonight and do some cleaning on it. The nakago is pretty grimey, I'll look under magification for a weld. Best Regards, Bob
  8. Gents, This fresh pick has a little old hemp banding decoration. I don't think I have noticed another shirasaya nihonto with the banding before. Anything to note since it's banded rather than unadorned? A particular Artist mark I would guess? Best regards, Bob
  9. I wonder what those samurai mercenaries where outfitted with by the Portugeuse in their colonies? The ones Blackthorne was complianing about to Toranaga. It's also a old Sukesada.
  10. Never thought of that, that seems possible however!
  11. Jean, Five? How many reasons does a Stephen smiley face count for?
  12. Gentlemen, I really do not have any thing to say about this as nobody I've contacted who I consider experts seems to have seen anything like it. Silver cage, copper kani, wooden tsuka/saya with touches of mother of pearl where a branch knot would be. Seems like much age to it. Best regards, Bob
  13. Hmm, The Rai is nowhere near the 20 G's expected?
  14. Is that what that one is Stephen? Read quite a bit about the school in Nagayama's book. I didn't bother trying to decode it as the grinder did not do it any favors! It was actually found in a garbage can in the 1980's in Chicago.
  15. Takusan gomen nasai's Mr. Schiller!
  16. In case anyone is interested. Best regards, Bob http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/191580476056?
  17. Thanks Guido, that makes a lot of sense!
  18. Gentlemen, I was working on this tanto mei and came up with Harubiye, Mr. Stiles helped and came up with Araoke but was not sure. Are either translations correct? Also is the kozuka dated to Chookyoo? Thank you in advance! Bob
  19. Jean, Yep Geraint caught that too, as I get older; any additions to my Japanese vocabulary (nihonto terms) just do not seem to stick like college Japanese class vocab assignments did 30 years ago. Best Regards, Bob
  20. Moritasan, Thank you very much, I was thinking Yoshino saku, I am glad to be set straight! Best Regards, Bob
  21. Gents, Anyone skillful on reading the stylish kanji? This is on a wak project blade in the area. Best regards, Bob
  22. Gentlemen, What do you think? Tomatoes... whoops Tomatos? Also, tried out the new modern camera to try and pull some midare utsuri out of this antique, but I don't know I must have rubbed most of it off when I put the chrome polish to it. Whoa, just kidding! Best Regards, Bob
  23. Jason, Great looking find all around, I can see why you were not going hard after the Chait blade if that was the back up. I hope I can catch a glimpse, do I need to bring my white Dress Blues gloves? I'll be on I-40 next Friday and Sat, I could go down Hwy 24 if your closer that way. Let me get your phone on PM and I'll give you a call next week. Best Regards, BOb
  24. Chris, Thank you very much for the hard work! I enjoyed the read and added it to the toshokan! Best Regards, Bob
