Tsurikomi & Tsukurikomi- how should these terms be used?

Recommended Posts

Tsurikomi... Tsukurikomi... These two terms are used somewhat interchangeably, but should they be?

Tsukuri translates to make up, or structure... and sometimes I've seen tsukurikomi used to mean blade construction (muku, kobuse, sanmai)... other times I've seen it used to mean blade style (shinogi zukuri, hira zukuri)...

I don't know what tsuri translates to, but tsurikomi is sometimes used to mean blade style as well (shinogi zukuri, hira zukuri)

Does anyone know for sure how these two words should be used?

Chris, here's a couple... if you google sword tsurikomi you will find more.

Also, I hate to question you on this, because you are far more knowledgeable than most of us on the Japanese language, but the word tsukuri is the same as zukuri like shinogi zukuri, and when I looked it up on an online translator, it told me tsukuri translated to make up, structure or physique, so...

Also, I should mention, when I looked up tsuri on that same translator, there were no matches, so I'm thinking tsurikomi is a mispronounciation of tsukurikomi, and tsukurikomi is the correct word. If that IS the case, the only other question is - does tsukurikomi mean blade construction (muku, kobuse, sanmai) or does it mean blade style (shinogi zukuri, hira zukuri)?
