george trotter Posted March 15, 2012 Report Posted March 15, 2012 Hi all, I'm still trying to find out who the maker of one of my two unknown WWII blades is...sorry to be a pain, but I'm hoping members can help me here. This is a question about a rare type of yasurime called kiri/sujikai (see pic). Not only is it rare in general, but it seems ultra rare in Showa period 1935-1945...in fact, I have only seen it twice... once on the nakago by Seisui 1944 of Tokyo (see my recent post below on "Unusual nakago inscriptions"), and once on a oshigata of a nakago by Nagao Kunishiro 1941 of Aomori prefecture (5th seat 1941 later RJT). As I have seen two later works by this Kunishiro (1944 and post-war), I can say he usually worked in kattesagari yasurime. So, to find out who used this rare kiri/sujikai yasurime during WWII period (as a clue to identifying my Seisui smith) I checked oshigatas and tang pics in all my Japanese gendaito references, in Slough, in Fuller & Gregory's oshigata books and in Rich Stein's Oshigata Database and have to report I saw NONE...so, as I know that Nagao Kunishiro of Aomori is definitely not Seisui of Tokyo...can I ask members to check their blades and records and let me know if they have any example of this yasurime and any information on the smith who used it please. I really hope an example of this rare yasurime turns up... Many thanks, Quote
takakage Posted March 16, 2012 Report Posted March 16, 2012 Hi, I don't know for showa swordsmiths, i find it on a shin shinto blade. This one http://www.seiyudo.com/ka-010134.htm Quote
george trotter Posted March 17, 2012 Author Report Posted March 17, 2012 Hi Patrick, thanks for the link...if my Japanese is correct the nakago description says Kessho kiri yasurime. I can see a part of the lower tang (closeup) however that seems to show hira kiri - shinogi sujikai as you say. Nice that he worked so late...it would be great if a Showa period one turns up... regards, Quote
george trotter Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Hi all. still nothing? I check every day and... ...no Showa posts. Are you suuure there are no Showa period gendaito blades in your collections with this kiri-sujikai yasurime? Has no-one even seen one? How about you Chris...you've seen 100's of these blades...never seen one with this yasurime? Am I doomed to never find a clue as to who made my Seisui blade? Here's hoping... Quote

Sorry George, nothing sticks out in my memory....to be honest, yasuri-me are not what I usually remember about a sword...Most of my references are in storage so not much I can do now.... Quote
george trotter Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Thanks anyway Chris...I know it is an unusual request...even a long shot...but maybe just raising it here will jog someone's memory and we will learn something after all. Can never hurt to ask...especially on NMB. Regards to all, Quote
