Bungo Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 I see ume........... and possibly a cresent moon. Do we have snow ? so the theme could be partial snow on lower branch of ume tree with crescent moon in the distant background ? p.s. or a halloween pumpkin with a " bad grin " like........ milt the ronin
Rich T Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 or maybe the moon shape is just part of the nakago ana ?, but I agree mate with the snow flake and plum branch. A winter theme for sure. Rich
Jean Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Hi Milt, I saw the tsuba before reading your post and it looks like plum branch and snow flakes, what is surprising is the position of the moon, it looks like a view at the sky from under the plum tree. But on another end, it could well be the famous one-eyed three-teeth Great Pumpkin celebrated by Charlie Brown  BTW, Milt any idea for repatinating the other identification tsuba I have posted and that NMB members seem to be at a loss for identification
Bungo Posted April 6, 2007 Author Report Posted April 6, 2007 Jean, You mean the shishi one ? A few years back, everyone ( well, most everyone )would label that a " Mito Shoami "........... but discussion from other sword message bd. concluded there's no such thing as a Mito Shoami ( an early urban tsuba myth ). So an Aizu Shoami is the answer as you already knew. p.s. so you see a " moon " from looking up ? you naughty boy milt the ronin
John A Stuart Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 With great imagination I can picture lace knickers, I have been back to work a couple of weeks, but seriously the cut out below the nakago-ana looks like a representation of the trunk or large branch of the plum tree, which can be quite gnarly, with blossoms in varying degrees of maturity going up from it. John

John ummmmmmmm ( ume ), lace ( snowy ), gnarly trunk point up to the moon. This could well be a good example of sumi-e in tsuba design Rich Trikie referred to !!!! Thank you boys, now do we get that flag waving/finger wagging dude ? milt the ronin
