Hello, I bought a katana with the tang saying:

Ashu Iwakura ju Masa Mori made ( with) Permission of his teacher Masa Hide August 1791 ( Hawley`s Mas.536 )

This is what I was told be seller, but the blade looks to be ww2 type oil quenched was polished with dull edge under the habaki era, typical feature of ww2 blades, can this realy be from 1791? Is the translation correct, in that case how can the blade look like ww2?

very curious for the right information, thanks in advance.

regards

Peter G.

The translation is correct.

However more precisely;

Ashu Iwakura ju Masamori made.

At Efu (Edo), (with) permission of (my) teacher Masahide, respectfully forged this in the 8th month of 1791.

it would not be unusual for a Shinshin-to blade to have ubu-ba or a flat spot on the cutting edge at the habaki. Could we see photos of the blade itself? The nakago and inscription look good and would be historically important if genuine.

Hoping to see more...

hmmm, forgive me for saying, but it sounds like you bought this blade for all the wrong reasons.
