javenowens Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 I know it is a long shot but I thought that with so much activity in the hamon maybe someone with some knowledge could narrow it down for me. This was passed down to my sister by my dad and has a lot of character. The boshi and hamon are noticeably different on each side. The measurements are as follows Nagasa:11 15/16inch Tang length 1 1/32 sori 0.5mm Here is the link for the photos http://s1020.photobucket.com/albums/af3 ... ens/tanto/ Quote
cabowen Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Your photos are taken to far away, are too small, and don't show important detail like the nakago...If you repost some closer shots, you will have a better chance of getting more signal and less noise.... Quote
sanjuro Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Who is the peasant with his greasy mits all over the blade? Sorry if its you or a relative, and no offense intended, but handling a sword blade like that is a mortal sin. Quote
Jamie Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Keith, I think that the hand is on the Nakago only, but of course I could be mistaken. It looks that way to me though. Quote
paulb Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 how is calling someone a peasant with greasy mits not intended to offend? Quote
sanjuro Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Jamie. I hope you are correct........ Even so, I nearly had a litter of purple kittens when I saw the photo....... Quote
sanjuro Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 PaulB Allow me a certain dramatic licence. There is no sin in being a peasant, 99% percent of us qualify for the appelation, and every human being on the planet has greasy mits when it comes to handling a sword blade. :D Quote
paulb Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 Keith, With Bowman as a surname I am one of the few peole in the UK who can make no claim other than having come from peasant stock so am not offended by the term. I just find it a strange quirk of modern communication that one seems to say anything and as long as they say "no offence" or put a behind it it somehow excuses abuse. I shall go back in to my dark corner and enjoy my misery Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 From what I can gleen from this sword, I lean towards a Bungo Takada school work. Note two different hamon on the two sides. The jihada is o and chumokume and the hamon is yakikuzure midare and gunome in spots notare and suguba. John Quote
javenowens Posted May 10, 2011 Author Report Posted May 10, 2011 The person with his hands on it is the polisher. Sorry I didn't reply sooner but I took the family on a vacation to Carlsbad Caverns. Quote
sanjuro Posted May 10, 2011 Report Posted May 10, 2011 I guess he knew what he was doing then huh? The only person likely to have a reason to handle the blade like that and I have to pick up on it!!!!!!! Me and my big mouth......... Quote
javenowens Posted May 12, 2011 Author Report Posted May 12, 2011 What age do you think? Koto or shinto? Quote
Jamie Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 What was the polishers opinion? Since he has it in hand, and is a polisher he may be the most qualified to tell you. I'm assuming he's properly trained however. Quote
Jimmy R Posted May 12, 2011 Report Posted May 12, 2011 Why would you ask the question here on this forum? Any Togishi will teel you more about this blade in hand than we could with mere pictures. Hmmmmm And wow gang, this is a day to mark on your calendar. Keith actually admitted he has a big mouth. No offense intended, I meant no offense, Jim Quote
javenowens Posted May 12, 2011 Author Report Posted May 12, 2011 I am asking on this forum because it is a nihonto forum and this is the kind of question people post here. The polisher I used told me it was mino but it is hard to get ahold of him for more info that is why I am asking experienced people here so I can get some more info on it before I send it back to my sister, who my dad passed it down to.
