I am not a collector of Shin Gunto so I have no idea about the different covers for the saya. I purchased this a long long time ago (it was actually my first sword) and it came as is shown. It never looked right to me so I removed the cover and was going to sell it with another leather covered sheath. I just had a buyer back out and now I am going to sell it again. My question is, Is this right? It fits perfectly but does not go all the way to the throat. I will wait for some info before I post it for sale and as always thank you to those who help me out.

Hi it looks like a put together koshirae at least from my point of view. The tsuka and tsuba are from a type 98 gunto koshirae and the saya is from a type 3. So possibly the leather cover could be mismatched as well. Kind regards Daniel

Could be? It is from another saya. Leave the combat cover for another sword, and never change saya. They don't fit well, and will cause wear on the blade.

It beats me why people think they can improve something with a mismatched non standard bit they scraped up somewhere. Someone has already ruined this koshirae by adding a saya that does not fit the sword, is not of the same issue and you want to compound that stupidity by fitting a leather cover that doesnt fit from some other koshirae.

I'm not nearly as kind as the other repondents, so for God's sake wake up to yourself and realise that people who buy these things are not as stupid as you would like to think they are. :steamed:

It is well then that I do not profess to be self righteously virtuous.

My point here if it is necessary to elucidate, was that in fitting yet another non standard ill fitting piece to an already mismatched koshirae, the seller is assuming that firstly he is improving something that certainly needs no further well intended tampering, but that also he is assuming a prospective buyer would consider the addition a welcome one. Better perhaps not to mess this sword up any further and be honest about its sorry status, since the buying public generally are more educated now than when this sword was originally purchased, supposedly in the state it is now.

I purchased this as it is shown. Like I said I do not collect WWII memorabilia. If I was trying to misrepresent an item I would not put it up on a forum asking questions about it. It is quite obvious some people who answer have absolutely no social skills whatsoever but we have all gotten used to that on this site and we take the good with the bad and misguided. And Yes I am talking about SANJURO who will not even sign his name.

Actually Sanjuro signs as Keith G...

My objection is being harsh to each other with no particular reason. It was clear from the first post that you bought the sword like this and I accept it. No fraud will pass the hawks of NMB.

Keith was unjustly harsh to you, while his comment was generally valid about mismatching types of gunto koshirae...

Flame wars always distrackt from the point.

PS I 'd like to see more of this bitterness to sellers trying to cheat the public with obvious misdescriptions (a fellow australian comes in mind) rather than people asking for opinions...

I see the Boy's name is Keith G.

:rotfl: Boy indeed..... I thank you for your unintended compliment. Its many years since I could have been considered a boy.

Jim.

My intent was not to suggest that you were intentionally trying to misrepresent the sword. Rather that you were unintentionally doing so to the detriment of your chances of selling it. I could and possibly should have merely said that it would better left alone rather than further devalued by the addition of an ill fitting saya cover. Have you considered trying to find a saya that matches the tsuka mounting? it would make the ensemble more original and since many of these blades were produced to a set style and size, the task would not be beyond achievable.

This is the point where I issue a stern warning about courtesy and politness.

Bit tired right now, so making this brief. Consider yourself warned Keith. :shame:
