werner Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Hi Folks, It's has been often mentioned on this forum that one can bring a nihonto to a show to have it judged by knowledgable guys...now I wondered if there is somebody in Australia where one could send a blade (cost to and from location paid by sword owner) to have it assessed in person...? Maybe even for a fee...? This might be interesting for other countries too... Regards, Jock Quote
sanjuro Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Hi Jock. Short answer ........ in Australia NO..... At least not an opinion that would be meaningful internationally. There are a few very clued up collectors, but not any that would be referred to as an authority. Nor indeed would any of the ones I know claim to be an authority. There is only one source of meaningful appraisals of any nihonto, and that source is shinsa. There is an NTHK shinsa next year in Sydney. If you want an appraisal of your sword with a view to having it polished, the same answer applies. There are no formally trained togishi in Australia at present. It sounds bleak I know, but we are a bit of a backwater when it comes to Nihonto. (Actually if Julia has her way we will be a third world country soon). Quote
