just wondered if the following is a genuine one...it has an unusual silver-kind of colour - yet is quite solid and heavy....

This is a cast fake.

is it correct that cast iron breaks when you hit it?

Generally speaking, yes, though you'd need a hard blow from lump hammer for any appreciable thickness. There are however grades of cast iron that have a higher tensile strength, are much less fragile under impact, and tend to bend rather than break when hit hard.

Another way far less likely to kill anyone with flying metal splinters, check inside the Kogai/Kodzuka ana, often you will see a tiny ridge running all around the center of the interior where the mould meets and can sometimes bee seen on the mimi.
