tony edmunds Posted August 7, 2010 Report Posted August 7, 2010 Hi Guys Could someone please help with an accurate translation of the signature on this mixed metal plaque I've recently acquired. I've got Ari Uji Riki Which doesn't look like a makers name to me! All help/opinions gratefully received Regards Tony Quote
cabowen Posted August 7, 2010 Report Posted August 7, 2010 kanji are: ari 有 uji 氏 to 刀 (which ironically means sword) Quote
tony edmunds Posted August 7, 2010 Author Report Posted August 7, 2010 Many thanks Chris I'm assuming this is the makers mei because I can't find any similar terms used for Noh masks/plays. ore research needed I fear. Regards Tony Quote
sensei215 Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 Very nicely done. Can you tell me the dimensions. Tim S Quote
tony edmunds Posted August 8, 2010 Author Report Posted August 8, 2010 Thanks Guido, I wasn't familiar with that usage. I acquired this piece, because the inlay technique and carving looked to be good quality. I haven't seen anything quite like it even in Japan. Any idea of period, I suspect Meiji? Dimensions are 320mm X 280mm weight 1.25 KG Regards Tony Quote
Stephen Posted August 8, 2010 Report Posted August 8, 2010 is it for holding pages of paper when writing? Quote
tony edmunds Posted August 9, 2010 Author Report Posted August 9, 2010 Hi Stephen You could be right , the seller believes it had a wooden mount (for use as a wall plaque) but of course this may not be its original use. Tony Quote
