$500 Gold pair of daisho menuki God of Fortune set

$500 Gold pair of God of Fortune menuki.

 

I picked these two sets up over the years for a koshirae project that won't happen. Now fire-sale to finance a nice Juyo. Review photos and ask questions.

 

Theme: God of Fortune hammer, bag, and travel hat

Age: unknown, presumed 1800s Edo. Kaga-esque.

Gold content: low. unknown. I've had these for years and they do not tarnish. One set seems slightly more rose gold than the other set.

The 'bag' may be a Mino straw cape, and it could be symbolizing or recalling the mino-game (Mino + Kame) , the turtle of long life.

Hmmm... not aware of what they are, but John, I was wondering whether the ajiro-gasa straw sombrero might not be decorated with a constellation map... oops

Fairly certain they are gold, but a lower %.

8k to 12k is my best guess.

From a machinist eye, they look like bronze, but with no corrosion showing hard to say for sure. Cheap and easy to find a little gold scratch test kit online, just to be sure.

Scratch kit will not be useful if they are less than 10k. Better to find an XRF if an exact percentage of gold is needed.

Interesting. I was unaware of XRF testing.

For my own knowledge, I will try and have them tested.

 

I have to admit that I thought these would only be up for a few hours.

They might be 20th century work, but I was fairly certain they were lower gold content. Aka. Like my brother's gold necklace from back in the 1970s-1980s.

 

I've had these for years. I be embarrassed if Mark is right and they are only a very gold-like shiny brass.

Don't think so, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

If you call around to pawn shops in your area you will certainly find one if not more that have XRF. The fee should be low if any at all as you only need to test one.

Not so many pawn shops in our area. It is a bit different from Florida.

I will check with some of the higher end watch shops, and a custom work shop I knew as a kid.

Mother was a bench jeweler long long ago, and one of the higher end custom shops for which she worked is still in business.

My knowledge of metals and gems is very dated to the prior century.
