Tsuba fixing

A ko Kinko tsuba recently acquired from Curran

I only found out a few months ago that brazing was not used in Japan

I wondered how these were held in place and at the same time I think this is the first time I've seen nanako used in the depressions used to refix the tsuba

I'd welcome any comments but remember the colour/patina is way off

This is made with a special TAGANE the face of which is modeled that way with small blind holes.

The decorative applications could have been soldered after making NANAKO JI, but this would have been a cheap technique in very late manufacture. Usually, they are fixed in ZOGAN technique, and NANAKO JI is applied later.
