Is this original mekugi ana since certification process? [2019]

It's described as single but it's clearly shaped after another drill - dunno if someone tried to make some savings on koshirae and instead of making proper tsuka he fixed ana.

What is Your opinion?

It's big blade, swinging it with loose peg is safe?

In the middle of compilation is photo from NBTHK and at sides dealer pics.

Thank You for opinion

I can´t say if it got enlargened or not (sure looks like it though) but as a practitioner I would not swing a sword that isn´t tight in the Tsuka. Too big of a risk imo

Techinically the ana can be oval/elongated and it wont compromise the security of the fit AS LONG AS the bottom of the tang fits tight and properly to the tsuka.

The mekugi applies pressure downwards into the tsuka. Of course the mekugi needs to be tight and properly positioned to the bottom part of the ana

Probably a period modification. I have seen it done on plenty of shinshinto swords. As others have said, as long as the mekugi applies pressure to the bottom of the redrilled mekugiana, you should be fine. Also fabricating new mekugi is easy enough. How beefy is the blade?

Marcin,

that should not be a problem unless you were shorter than 220 cm! :glee:

Hi Rawa,

Thank you very much for your interest.

We can confirm that the Mekugi-ana since NBTHK Certification.  It is likely that on our website it looks different due to the angle when the Photography was done by us for the website.

We hope this information helps.  If you are interested in this piece, please message us on our whatsapp and we can send some live photography of the tang.

Best,

Also should reiterate that the blade weight with 1 mekugi should not matter. For about half a year before I went to a sword with a sugata that was more my liking I used a gendaito by kanenobu regularly that weighed upwards of 1400 grams. It only had 1 rather thin mekugi, and not once did I have to change it out, even after cutting with it and doing paired work. There should not be any issue with this sword having 1 mekugi, theyre much stronger then most think.

Jonathan, my concern was not in a number but shape. If ana was elongated You have loose space near mekugi.
