Gerry Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 This interesting Gassan Sadakazu katana came up on Yahoo Japan, with recent NBTHK origami. It's a pity that Jauce won't ship to the US at the moment, and the sword went for a song. https://www.jauce.com/auction/w1222339892?allow=1 https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w1222339892? 1 Quote
Geraint Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 (edited) Dear Gerry. Looks like someone got a nice sword. Sugata is kissaki moroha zukuri or more applicably kogarasu maru zukuri for this one. All the best. Edited March 17 by Geraint Quote
Brian Posted March 17 Report Posted March 17 His classic sugata, and one of my Grails. Lovely sword. Quote
Bryce Posted March 18 Report Posted March 18 G'day Guys, Yeah someone got a good deal, but this blade has me scratching my head a little bit. It appears to be a blade signed by Sadakazu in Meiji year 3, but finished with Sadakatsu's kao, not Sadakazu? The sayagaki was written by Sadakatsu in Showa 11. Is the date on the blade actually Meiji year 30? If so then that makes sense. Cheers, Bryce Quote
Conway Posted March 19 Report Posted March 19 (edited) I think it’s 三午年, which is Meiji 3 year of the horse (1870). Edited March 19 by Conway S Quote

klee Posted March 19 Report Posted March 19 Hi @Gerry no worries Also this is a Tokuno Kazuo appraisal certificate and not NTHK either. The papers somewhat look similar but I ve heard mixed opinion about Kazuo. I would think anytime a big name like Gassan coming up today without NBTHK would be quite the red flag 1 1 Quote
Bryce Posted March 19 Report Posted March 19 Righto then, I guess Gassan Sadakatsu added his kao at a later date for some reason as he was only 1 year old when this blade was forged? I have seen several Gassan Sadakazu blades where later Gassan smiths (usually Sadaichi) have added horimono and mei. Cheers, Bryce Quote

Geraint Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 (edited) Dear Khalid. I believe that Brian, in describing such a sword as one of his Grails was referencing the Arthurian story of the search for the Holy Grail, something much desired and sought after but virtualy unobtainable. In other words I don't think he has one yet. I stand to be corrected and I am sure that Brian would love to be able to do so. All the best. Edited April 13 by Geraint 1 Quote
Brian Posted April 13 Report Posted April 13 Exactly. One of those items you search for your whole life, but are likely unable to ever own. 1 Quote
