I was given this implement by a relative - They weren't sure of its origin. I think it could be a fish gaffer - but open to others suggestions. Any idea what the text says? [Apologies in advance if not Japanese~].

Hi Sally,

In the separate cartouche at the top is the kanji 長 "naga" or "Chou" meaning long or superior. Below is a place name 小串町 "Kogushi machi" or "Kogushi Chou" - meaning Kogushi town which is a district of Shimonoseki city in Yamaguchi prefecture.

We cant see the whole object but I'm 98 per cent sure this is a bat gaff for commercial fishing, probably tuna, made in Kogushi machi, likely before 1956 when the area still used this name. It's called a bat gaff because its short, truncheon to baseball bat sized. It uses a 90 degree bend hook and short lengh for hauling fish over gunwhales and moving fish around on deck/at market, compared to a long pole gaff design with a more classically shaped J hook used for controlling and lifting fish out of the water from above.

Thanks everyone. I did think it was for fishing, [found washed up on a beach here, date found unknown] - but getting the translation >location and an indication of a date is really great. Much appreciated.
