Eric_P Posted November 24, 2025 Report Posted November 24, 2025 Hello Everyone, What model of kyu gunto would this be and what would be the approximate time period? I assume this would be considered a type 19 but I am unsure. Thanks, EricY Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted November 24, 2025 Report Posted November 24, 2025 Hi Eric, I am learning as we go with the kyugunto. Dawson, page 63, says your backstrap pattern is of the Type 19 kyugunto. He also states the second suspension mount was removeable on the 19s. If it is not, then this might be a Type 8. Is the blade signed? Can we get some shots of the nakago (tang)? 1 Quote
Eric_P Posted November 24, 2025 Author Report Posted November 24, 2025 Thanks Bruce, I will post a picture of the blade but it is in a sad state. Unsigned and extremely shortened but definitely an old koto blade. The wood liner in the saya did some damage to the blade (moisture) and the wood is very fragile. Unfortunately it will probably stay this way. Not sure this would warrant a polish. The second hanger is solid not removable. One of the interesting points is that the handle seems to be made in relation to the blade length (23 in). The handle is at least 2-3 inches shorter than other type 19s I have seen with longer blades. Thanks, Eric 1 Quote

lonely panet Posted November 24, 2025 Report Posted November 24, 2025 Its a type 19 company grade 2 Quote
Eric_P Posted November 25, 2025 Author Report Posted November 25, 2025 Here is a pic of the blade. Like I said before it is in terrible shape. This is probably the shortest and most curved kyu gunto I have personally seen. 30 inches overall. The hamon is visible but not much else. Eric 1 Quote
