Is there any significance to this notch I keep seeing on blades near where bottom oedge of the habaki would be?

Hi all,

I posted my latest aquisition here a few days ago and as I was doing my research came across a number of bladed that have a notch in the nakago and wondered if this was significant at all, or if it was a product of the habaki making process? Please let me know your thoughts!

Usually found on older blades, it is where the tsuba (over the centuries) has subtly or in this case not-so-subtly bit into the softer steel of the nakago.

Aaaah I see, that makes a lot of sense thank you. It's a good pointer towards authenticity then!

This is where sekigane is useful ( the small copper inserts on the tsuba)

The soft copper sits between the tsuba and the nakago
