From what you have shown so far the Mei is in a totally inappropriate place on the nakago and thus highly unlikely it was put there by whoever made the blade. The nakago patina suggests that it is suriage and machiokuri ie the nakago has been chopped and the machi moved up the blade. Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted June 17 Report Posted June 17 Hi Thomas,I have the attached piece which I believe is a gardeners knife or Nata .The blade has a reverse curve in that the cutting edge is on the concave side . I suspect yours is a Japanese gardening implement as well. Ian brooks 2 Quote

It does look like the tang was cut unless it's kiri style. Quote
Brian Posted June 18 Report Posted June 18 Originated as a genuine tanto, maybe repurposed by someone or some group. I still suspect some or other more primitive group. 1 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 18 Report Posted June 18 The Nakago looks kind of long. I wonder if it underwent Machi-okuri at some point? 1 Quote
Matsunoki Posted June 18 Report Posted June 18 Well now we know! An old Tanto blade repurposed. Interesting and it has its own place in history. Possibly used as a multi-purpose tool rather than a gardening tool (wrong shape for that). Also, the saya is far too long and too curved to have been made for this blade so maybe it’s a marriage between an old blade and an existing mounting. 1 1 Quote

No more attributes visible (at least on pictures) that could help. But I CAN tell you one thing. This is NOT a Japanese Wakizashi, not anymore at least Quote
