Other Info and Full Description

*1 The sword is by Fujino Masatsugu from Chichibu city in Saitama Prefecture.

It was made at the request of Sakurai Saburō, on the ocassion of the 13th anniversary of the passing of his relative Sakurai Tomiharu, who was at one time a Lieutenant colonel in the Japanese Imperial Army. Tomiharu was born in Sendai city on January 23rd, Meiji 19 (1886), and died at the age of 89 (1975) in Kawagoe city.
*2 This means the sword was made around 1988.

A very unique Katana made by Fujino Ikkansai Masatsugu, real name Fujino Yoshisaburo (藤野芳三郎), was born in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture, and lived in Kagemori City, Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture. According to the All Japan Swordsmiths Association he passed away in 2019. He is listed in various sources as Fujino Masasuke (藤野政丞); Fujino Masamitsu (藤野正光) or Fujino Mitsumasa (藤野光正). He was one of the five students of the famous swordsmith Sakai Ikkansai Shigemasa (b. 1905 †1996), whose real name is Sakai Hiroshi from the Kasama school.

- Sakurai Saburō, was also a lieutenant colonel in the Imperial Japanese Army. This is evident from documents provided by John (PNSSCHOGUN).

- The tassel is a original one, but I added to the sword. I buy it without tassel.

- Serial number 29 is present on all fittings and on the inner wooden saya.

- In keeping with the Sakurai family, the mon (family crest) in the form of the sakura (cherry blossom) is on the kabutogane and on both sides of the habaki.

- A donation will be made to the NMB if sold.
