kissakai Posted July 18, 2023 Report Posted July 18, 2023 I asked for the shapes of blades as this was the straightest I'd seen. The chart suggest 1161 - 1672. I was interested in the tsuba as I've seen this type before but can't remember any of the details. Same applies to the saya. Cant see much of the hamon Pretty sure it never had any menuki. The habaki/tang has been move forward an inch or so, any idea why as overall it appears ubu. The mei will go onto the translation page I'd like as much information as possible as he may sell it Quote
kissakai Posted July 19, 2023 Author Report Posted July 19, 2023 I thought the shape was possibly a strong clue Quote
Lee Bray Posted July 19, 2023 Report Posted July 19, 2023 The shape is a strong clue, it's more than likely Kanbun period. That correlates with the translation of the attribution on the tang. In that condition, it's probably all you have to go on. Kissaki looks shortened and poorly formed, shinogi is wavy and rounded off, saya looks somewhat crude - kurikata is not straight, koiguchi does not flow with the saya body and looks like lacquer soaked hessian. Would seem to be a homemade restoration, unfortunately. 1 Quote
kissakai Posted July 19, 2023 Author Report Posted July 19, 2023 Thanks Lee No problems in being honest. Any thoughts about the tsuka wrap Quote
Lee Bray Posted July 19, 2023 Report Posted July 19, 2023 From what I can see, probably home restoration again, although reasonably well done. I'd imagine katate-maki is slightly easier to do and look good just because there are less diamonds. Quote
dkirkpatrick Posted July 19, 2023 Report Posted July 19, 2023 Looks like a nice gunome hamon. This would be a good blade to use uchiko on and look at in varying light to train your eyes to see sword potential when out of polish. Doug Quote
Jon Posted July 24, 2023 Report Posted July 24, 2023 Is that drops of water on the blade…it really needs an oil. Quote
kissakai Posted July 27, 2023 Author Report Posted July 27, 2023 Any idea why the habaki was moved foreword? Looks like it was moved a similar distance as the distance between the securing pins At least it wasn't shortened Quote
