Thanks, Colin. Nice to know. Their descriptions are certainly not perfect, but better than I expected.

Lot 129 is a serious battlefield weapon, Ogino-Ryu school of gunnery. The others look at first glance more like decorative merchants' guns for small game.

Are these clowns serious?
30% buyer premium, PLUS 6% for the online bid, PLUS 20% Vat?
56% added on the sale price? You know where they can stick that.....
I've never heard of an auctioneer having to charge vat, except on the buyer's premium. I think there is something dodgy there.

Hi Brian….I don’t think it’s dodgy…..this outfit is owned by Thomas del Mar, ex Sothebys Arms and armour guy and I know him….in fact I’ve dealt with them a few times.

The massive 20% tax addition arises if an item is imported into the UK for sale and is less than 100 years old then it does indeed attract a full 20% VAT on hammer price, that is in addition to the normal commission rate of the auctioneer (which itself attracts 20%VAT) and then on top of that if you buy online there is another 6% including VAT.

If an item is imported for sale and is antique ie over 100 yrs then it attracts a 5% VAT on top the the auctioneers/online commission.

So if it’s antique and not imported and you buy online then you pay hammer +36% which includes the online commission and relevant VAT

if you turn up and buy it in the room then it’s 30% incl VAT

Its great fun getting ripped off by both our Govt and the Auctioneers🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

i think I’ve got that right

Colin,
Thank you for the heads up on the auction at Del Mars.

On the 28th, around 13.20 I was having a tea break and looked at Instagram. Del Mars came up on the feed, so I logged onto their website, and the auction was in progress. There were 6 lots to go before the teppo was auctioned. I completed the online registration and confirmed the account via email; however, the account had to be approved. i then telephone De Mars and asked them to approve me, they did, and it was one lot before the teppo. I placed one bid and won. Yesterday I popped down from Northnats to London and collected it.

Is it a beast of a rifle, ten momme? Near mint condition, and I'm very happy to own it.

I would have missed this without looking at NMB. Once again many thanks for the notification.

Regards

David

David, some things in life are meant to be. Well done and I’m pleased I could help. Enjoy it. Regards. Colin

Agreed! Lightning connections for a good solid buy.

PS in a rush, will add more in a minute.

PPS can’t call it a ‘rifle’ as it’s a smooth bore!

PPS Aren’t there any more characters on the barrel below Sesshū Jū Kagoya Gonuemon ….(+?)

The Kamon is similar to Oda Mokko. Nicely done in silver.

The barrel construction is given as 地鉄総巻張

The Mei reads:

摂州住籠谷権右衛門, but we might expect that the smith's personal name coming after that. (No?)

PS This is a 士筒, a Shizutsu (Samurai gun), heavier than a normal Gunyozutsu footsoldier's long gun. (The ramrod is the wrong way round, by the way.)

Hi Piers, hope you are well.
I've removed the pins from the stock, and the barrel is jammed in tight. I don't want to force it in case the wood has shrunk after being introduced to the temperature/humidity of my home. Maybe next time you visit, you can give it a karate chop?

I've had a good month acquiring teppo. I met Ian Bottomley at the Birm Arms Fair last weekend and picked up one and another from the fair before. One in Hall 1 and the other in Hall 3 for £600.00 each. I can share some photos.

I'll share the photos here. As you know, I'm pretty clueless about them.

Best

David

Wow, great start, and looking like some bargains.
With the pins out you remove the karuka ramrod and lift the hi-basami serpentine. Then place the butt on the floor, and you can tap the end of the barrel sideways with a rubber hammer, karate heel of the hand, etc., to move/peel it away from the stock.
