Ray Singer Posted March 22, 2023 Report Posted March 22, 2023 Ian, the sayagaki would be referring to this smith (credit Markus Sesko). MASAMITSU (政光), Jōji (貞治, 1362-1368), Bizen – “Bishū Osafune Masamitsu” (備州長船政光), “Masamitsu” (政光), according to tradition the son or student of Kanemitsu (兼光), we know date signatures from the second year of Enbun (延文, 1357) to the sixth year of Ōei (応永, 1399) which means an active period of more than 40 years, his workmanship changes from about Kōō (康応, 1389-1390) onwards and so the theory exists that there were two generations Masamitsu, generally he worked in the style of Kanemitsu but his hamon is somewhat more densely arranged and appears as ko-gunome tending to kataochi or ko-gunome with many ashi, we also know works with a slightly undulating notare mixed with gunome and ashi, jō-saku ◎ 1 Quote
