Bridges Posted December 13, 2022 Report Posted December 13, 2022 I bought these two swords knowing that I would probably never resell them but wanted them in my collection as although they are in less than ideal condition, I know an acceptable grade for the Commisioned Kyu-Gunto blade is several and I mean several thousand dollars and the command saber maybe 4 times what I paid for this one. I paid $225 for the commissioned Officer Kyu Gunto. The issues are the hanger mount slides freely off the scabbard and the blade has let’s just say, a dark patina 😂 yea the blade is shot. But, i offered the same seller $125 for the Type 19 command saber and he bit. The issue with it, is the end cap and seppa are missing. Other than that, blade is in fair condition. I know it’s not ideal to fill collections with crappy blades but even worn out blades need a home! Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted December 14, 2022 Report Posted December 14, 2022 Noah, Both items are cool swords to have. The top one of the first photo is a Naval warrant officer sword and the other is an Army Warrant officer sword. Could you post clear shots of the floral work on the handguards and backstraps? Quote
lonely panet Posted December 14, 2022 Report Posted December 14, 2022 its not correct, its just a very rough typr 19 feild grade kyu dress sword 1 Quote
Bridges Posted December 14, 2022 Author Report Posted December 14, 2022 @Bruce Pennington here are the requested pictures. I believe the Kyu Gunto 19 is a Taiwan occupation blade Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted December 14, 2022 Report Posted December 14, 2022 That's better, thanks! I was wrong on the navy one. I had thought the solid handguard was for Warrant Officer, but the company grade officers had that feature too. The floral pattern on the other metal fittings are of Company grade. There are 9-leaf and 11-leaf patterns, yours being the 9-leaf pattern. Dawson said there is no meaning behind the two. I don't see that backstrap pattern in the book, but he lists several custom designs, so it's likely just a variation. Army one: The drag design and brown saya had me thinking Warrant officer, but the tsuka is officer, and by the backstrap, likely Field grade. There were so many variations in these. I'm no expert on the Type 8/19, but I feel like the drag pattern was early in the model. Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted December 15, 2022 Report Posted December 15, 2022 Noah, You will thoroughly enjoy both books. What you have pictured there, is the earlier edition of Fuller. His updated version looks like this: The one you have is still good and actually has a couple items left out of the updated version. But the updated version is still better. 1 Quote

Bridges Posted December 15, 2022 Author Report Posted December 15, 2022 @Bruce Penningtoni had no idea. Thanks for letting me know I will have to look into finding that edition Quote
lonely panet Posted December 15, 2022 Report Posted December 15, 2022 dont, its over priced for what information it holds, Dawsons is far more comprehensive, better photo's and more information 2 Quote
