WADamo Posted March 18, 2022 Report Posted March 18, 2022 Hi I'm a novice so please go easy. I acquired this WWII Gunto, with what appears to be an older traditional blade (71 cm cutting edge) and the Mei has been translated as Echizen no kuni kanetane saku. (see below) (Apologies I cant rotate) I have had some concerns about the mei raised by soemone significantly more experienced than myself. No suitable match of the mei has been found (I have limited resources and - Internet no books) I would like to consider if it is a worthwhile process to have the blade restored. May ask if anyone has seen a similar signature and blade ? Could this be a dai mei from one of Kanetane's students or is it a gimei ? All thoughts and opinions are welcome. Thanks in advanced. Shugyosha Posted March 18, 2022 Report Posted March 18, 2022 Hi Damo, I’m away from my books at the moment, but from a quick online search, there were at least two smiths signing Echizen Kanetane. Here’s a couple of authenticated signatures from the first generation which uses the abbreviated “Kane” kanji, so my feeling is that it probably wasn’t this one. http://sanmei.com/contents/media/A19229_S1298_PUP_E.htm https://www.aoijapan.com/wakizashi-echizen-kuni-kanetane-first-generation/ He was working around 1630. Your blade looks like it has the shape common around 1660 (Kanbun) which is the second generation’s work period so you might have more luck there. 1 Quote
