Blackwell Posted September 3, 2018 Report Posted September 3, 2018 New to the forum. Please pardon any protocol failures on my part. I sincerely appreciate any help with these inscriptions. Thanks! Quote
Geraint Posted September 3, 2018 Report Posted September 3, 2018 Dear Edwin. Welcome! Your only protocol failure was not adding your name to your post. The last one says, "Sagami no Kuni junin Hiromitsu". As this is potentially a big name I think we would all like to see more images. Enjoy. All the best. Quote
Shugyosha Posted September 3, 2018 Report Posted September 3, 2018 First one is [Yama] shiro Daijo Fujiwara Yoshiyuki. There is only one guy signing Yoshiyuki this way who was awarded the honorary title "Daijo" of a province, so by process of elimination it's this one if it's genuine. It seems like a pretty big typo to miss off the first character for the province though - all of the province names are composed using two characters, that said he's not an obvious candidate for a false signature. This guy from Markus Sesko's eJapanese Swordsmiths: YOSHIYUKI (義行), 1st gen., Kanbun (寛文, 1661-1673), Bungo – “Yamashiro no Daijō Yoshiyuki” (山城大掾義行), “Bungo-jū Yamashiro no Daijō Fujiwara Yoshiyuki” (豊後住山城大掾藤原義行), “Bungo Takada-jū Fujiwara Yoshiyuki” (豊後高田住藤原義行), he changed his name later to Toyohira (豊平) and Kunihira (国平), see also “KUNIHIRA (国平), Kanbun (寛文, 1661-1673), Bungo” Quote
Blackwell Posted September 4, 2018 Author Report Posted September 4, 2018 Thank you -- I shot a few additional images of the three swords. I sincerely appreciate your help! Edwin 1 Quote
Surfson Posted September 4, 2018 Report Posted September 4, 2018 John, I think the Yama from Yamashiro is there - the left side stroke is just in the shade of the shinogi. Quote
Shugyosha Posted September 4, 2018 Report Posted September 4, 2018 You're absolutely right Robert, sorry Edwin, please disregard my previous comments regarding the missing character. Best, John Quote
SteveM Posted September 4, 2018 Report Posted September 4, 2018 The middle one looks like 服部正廣 Hattori Masahiro Quote
Blackwell Posted September 6, 2018 Author Report Posted September 6, 2018 Steve, John, Robert, Geraint ... thank you all very much for your help! I see that I was supposed to disclose the purpose for my inquiry, if commercial. These swords were consigned to my auction gallery for sale on Sept 29. They will be described using the information you all provided. Quote
