John A Stuart Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 Hi Milt, The one mon on the fuchi looks like Inari motif of kitsune, very foxlike. Here is a chart of various billfish which I think is what the kozuka has artistically rendered. John Quote
drbvac Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 Having seen some diving in the keys I think IMHO they actually look more like a species of needlefish. They are smaller without the sail and are failry slender For you sushi lovers : Needlefish / Sayori Needlefish live throughout the coastline of Japan but they are mainly abundant off the southern coast of the country. The needlefish has a very unique figure because their chin is longer than their nose. Needlefish (Sayori in Japanese) are a school fish and they live in top water. They grows to about 12 inch long (30cm). The best season for this fish is spring and it comes directly from Japan. Quote
Bungo Posted May 5, 2008 Author Report Posted May 5, 2008 thanks !!! and I have another sayori theme kozuka through horse trading with another dealer....... I think it's waki Goto. The front end nanako is worn smooth, actual color of the worn area is darker than the pics shown. p.s. Boss let me get two as two fish is her zodiac sign milt Quote
Bungo Posted May 5, 2008 Author Report Posted May 5, 2008 wait...... these may be ayu ( sweet fish ) ? another two fish, she's ok with that. milt Quote
Mantis dude Posted May 5, 2008 Report Posted May 5, 2008 I immediately thought of a needle type fish, it reminded me of a fish used for bait to catch marlin and other bigger game fish that I have used to troll with. Some nice finds. oh yeah, you would know if you had photoshop- it is a major program that most don't want to bother with, too many options and tools. Sad to miss another one and I would really love to be in one of these famous auctions that I have heard and read about for years (there are even mentions of them in old sets of JSS bullitens that I have). Thanks for sharing. Quote
Bungo Posted May 5, 2008 Author Report Posted May 5, 2008 mantis, Mike Yamasaki has a very nice BLACK shakudo mentis menuki set .........asking 500, I asked him to hold it for you till you contact him to say yes or no. I expect you can get a bit of discount as he remember you as the mantis nut. milt Quote

Bungo Posted May 10, 2008 Author Report Posted May 10, 2008 Secret agent man, based on the style, I think the koz of the prunus is Ichijo school. milt Quote
Jean Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 What is Ichijo school, Dr Ong? Sorry but my bibles have stocked away as I shall be moving within 4 months and I have 25 yearq to pack    Quote
Jean Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 Thanks John, that is what I thought but was too lazy to google it Quote
Bungo Posted May 10, 2008 Author Report Posted May 10, 2008 Secret agent man, I was looking at several catalogs/books etc. Most of the koz with that style are labelled Ichijo ( some signed as such ). I quote from one entry........ Kozuka : shibuichi, hira-zogan of silverand shakudo, with touches of katakiri. Signed Hokkio Ichijo ( and kakihan ). The Goda Collection of Japanese Sword Fitting. milt Quote
