Greetings,

I wonder if the flaw shown  in the 4 pictures below is a hagire.  I feel certain that the sword has a hagire, and someone (probably long ago)  did a machi okuri to move it below the machi. I looked at the sword edge-on and slowly tilt the sword to see if the cracks match up. and they do indeed match up on the edge. Any input/opinion/advice is much appreciated.

Warmest Regards,

Hoanh

Looks like hagiri to me. Most that I have seen have been more subtle. A barely seen scratch that has a similar scratch on the other side of the blade. Some hagiri are very easy to miss.

Hoanh,

this looks like a bad crack that someone tried in vain to weld with the wrong method. This cannot be done easily without damaging the blade in this area as you see from the porous structure.

Nowadays some jewellers have very small welding devices (oxygen/hydrogen) which can work in a very limited space. You can even prevent the heat from damaging the HAMON if it is not too close.

I am not sure if this "repaired" HAGIRE can be repaired!

Jean and Barry,

Thank you for your inputs. They reinforce my belief that we are looking at a hagire.
