On offer are two excellent Owari tsuba.

 The first is a large (81mm x 80 x 5 [4.5 at the nakago-ana]) Mokkogata guard, featuring a Ju Mon with inome-bori motif.
This is a well-designed iron tsuba representing the Ju Mon (Japanese number 10) that was used by a number of Buke families, particularly those related to the Shimazu clan. The tsuba is thicker at the edge than at the center, providing a sense of strength and stability to the form which is enhanced further by the guard's large size and a coarse kitae-hada.  The lead plugs are associated with early Owari tsuba.  Great color and condition.  Papered to Owari by the NBTHK.

The objects found in Daimyo dogu inventories help us to identify the types of tsuba that are of particular interest to study and preserve because of this association with the Daimyo. An image of this tsuba appears in the Owari Yagyu Daimyo tsuba inventory (see photo). Although many of the tsuba illustrated in the inventory are the designs of Yagyu Renya, there are some that are not. This is one such example.

This tsuba is featured in the 2015 Kokusai Tosogu Kai (KTK) catalogue.  A copy of this catalogue will be included along with the tsuba.

$2,000 plus paypal fees and shipping.

The next piece is an Owari ji-sukashi marugata tsuba featuring a boldly-expressed Aoi mon.

The iron appears quite hard and there are subtle tekkotsu in the rim. A rarely seen feature on Owari tsuba is the men wo toru (rounded edges) seen on the corners of the sukashi piercing. This is a characteristic normally seen in the works of the Hayashi, who although are famous as Higo smiths, are thought to have migrated from Owari province to work for the Kato clan.  This feature is also seen on the early Yamakichibei works.

This particular version of the Aoi Mon was used by the Honda, a Daimyo clan founded by Honda Tadakatsu, one of the Shi-Daitenno of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The use of this Mon, the characteristics of the metal, the finishing of the plate, and the proportions of the guard place it in the early Edo period.

This tsuba is featured in the 2015 Kokusai Tosogu Kai (KTK) catalogue.  A copy of this catalogue will be included along with the tsuba.

$1400 plus paypal fees and shipping.

I won't have these on offer for long, so don't hesitate to get in touch if interested.

Cheers,

Steve

Steve,  Although unrelated to these 2 beautiful Tsuba, Thank you for the Wonderful Higo Tsuba (Now my avatar on NMB).  It feels great in the hand and has heft. A great first Tsuba to start my collection with.
