Shimada Sukemune Wakizashi Nthk Papers

I have owned this sword for a long time, well over 10 years but its time to move it on.

It is a wakizashi that has been cut down from a katana. It has NTHK Yoshikawa papers to den Shimada Sukemune (1610). I had it papered at a UK shinsa in the condition it is in now.

The blade has few small kitae kizu, the worst of which is near the habaki and an umegane that is well done and hard to see unless you look very closely.

The sword is soshu in style and the blade is covered in round blobs of tobiyaki, the hamon is very wild with a great deal of activity in it. The jigane is a running o-itame. It's really hard to get a good photo of the blade, its much better in hand. The tobiyaki is really good! I think the NTHK described the sword on the paper as being hitatsura.

I will post more information and measurements later on.

The sword is in a shirasaya with copper habaki.

I would like to keep the sale UK only but you can always talk to me.

This is a good quality sword with papers and I feel the price is very reasonable. Personally I suspect the blade is older and Koto, it would be interesting to see what the result from an NBTHK or NTHK NPO shinsa would be. Very experienced UK collectors felt the blade was Bizen Omiya and from the 1450s but that is for the new owner to decide.

Price is £700 including shipping in the UK.

That's a good deal, especially for oversees buyers with the low gbp at present. I can see what would lead you to think koto but also the shimada attribution. A difficult one to kantei for sure but maybe muromachi den sukemune?

Good luck with the sale.
