Jason Williams Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 Request assistance in research I have been researching a Wakizashi on Art Aoi and am having a hard time matching the Tadayoshi 4th signature on the blade to my (Connoisseurs) reference books/ Internet. Art Aoi is very respected, so I am missing something. Based on my research I know a smith can change signatures over time but I am unsure if this is the case. http://www.aoijapan.com/wakizashi-oumi-daijyo-fujiwara-tadayoshi-4th-generation Thank you Jason Quote
Jean Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 It is papered by NBTHK, so the signature is genuine. If you don't have Roger Robertshaw's book or CD, don't try to compete with NBTHK shinsa, their library includes thousand of books. Quote
Isocyanide Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 Jason, that's a good sword from 4th gen Tadayoshi. If you are intestered in the school Aoi has one that is Hizen Tadayoshi perfection for a similar price: http://www.sword-auction.jp/english/auction.cgi?acc=disp&no=1440892440&t=1213703271 In my opinion it's a Nidai dai-saku mei, made by the Sandai Tadayoshi who is arguably the best of the school. You're able to tell by the deep katte-agari yasurime. Based on the mei I believe the sword was made around 1672 the same year as the wakizashi I have. The right foot of 'Dai' is smoothed out and not angled. The vertical stroke in 'Tada' is centered and not slanted, which he started doing in 1674. I almost feel bad for Nidai, I keep seeing swords made by his son being called the best of his work... I'm not an expert though and could be wrong, but it is an amazing sword regardless. Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 In my opinion it's a Nidai dai-saku mei, made by the Sandai Tadayoshi who is arguably the best of the school. You're able to tell by the deep katte-agari yasurime. That was my thought at well. It looks like a beautiful piece from the sandai. My impression is that it is not totally ubu though. The nakago appears to have been reduced (shaved back) from the nakago-mune side. Best, Ray Quote
Jason Williams Posted September 6, 2015 Author Report Posted September 6, 2015 Thanks for the information guys. Steve, also thank you for the heads up on the Tadayoshi 2nd gen. I have been watching that one as well(drooling) I think it went for about 701,000 yen last night, but right now the extra cash just wasn't available. Hopefully, a member was able to get it and will be able to share what he has learned. Jason Quote
Peter Bleed Posted September 6, 2015 Report Posted September 6, 2015 Jason, and Friends, This has been a terrific example of how the NMB can and should work. It began with a sincere and well-framed question that was supported by easily accessed graphics. The discussion was expert and specific and real real fast. I think it was also a fair use Tsuruta-san's webpage.I also have to agree with Ray that the mune-machi is - ahhh - interesting. This one covers the NMB with glory! Peter Quote
