Marius Posted June 30, 2015 Report Posted June 30, 2015 A great tsuba and a very interesting one, too. It is a large, very bold guard with an imposing presence. The hammer work, wear, and patina give it an aura of great age; the way the plate and rim are done attests to the great talent of the tsubako. In terms of quality it is comparable to the work of the nidai Yamakichibei. However, this is not a Yamakichibei tsuba and it could well be made by the Umetada or Myochin schools. The iron is of outstanding quality, with a chocolatey colour - there are some remnants of black lacquer. The hammer work is simply superb, as is the execution of the rim. The inlays of soft metal are very well done and indicate that someone held this tsuba in great regard. I don’t know what the odd shaped opening would have represented. Robert Haynes thought this to be a Nobuie school tsuba, BTW. 9.2 x 9.0 x 0.3 cm at rim, 0.25 at seppa dai This one is a really large tsuba, consider, it is over 9 cm. Momoyama period. $1,200 plus shipping ($15), PayPal extra
