Johnny Barracuda Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 I have a type 19 Armu company officer kyu gunto whose release catch spring is broken. It has the button and the upper bar, but the spring bar is missing, so the sword does not lock in the scabbard. Does anyone know how to repair this part or procure an intact one? Quote
Geraint Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Dear Thibault. Not too difficult to do yourself if you have the tools. A thin leaf of spring steel and a brass rivet are all that is needed. Failing that it might be worth asking here: http://www.guntoartswords.com/ All the best Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 Thanks for your answer. The problem is "if you have the tools". Since metalworking is not my favourite DIY field, I do not have the tools. Quote
Geraint Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Well there you are, I just messaged you with the same offer. How good is NMB! All the best. 1 Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 That is awfully nice of both of you! Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 Your welcome. I have repaired those locks before. You just ship it to me and I repair it and I ship it back. Only the lock offcourse i dont need the hole sword. 1 Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted April 9, 2015 Author Report Posted April 9, 2015 Thank you! Nice solidarity between fellow Navy kyu gunto fans! I removed the lock from the Army kyu gunto. Can you send me your address by PM? Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted April 10, 2015 Author Report Posted April 10, 2015 The lock is flying to Denmark! 1 Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted June 16, 2015 Author Report Posted June 16, 2015 Sadly, the story ended badly. The part Thomas fixed was lost either by the Danish or the French Mail Service. Unable to find a replacement kyu gunto catch, I had to buy a shin gunto release catch, which is too wide and too long for a kyu gunto, but which is currently retrofitted by a weaponsmith to fit my sword. I hope it works. Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted June 16, 2015 Report Posted June 16, 2015 Yes , sad story. One thing we conclude... The postal service got long fingers. I will make a claim and search for it ,thru the Danish postal service. But as You told me ,theres other letters You havnt recived ,so maybe its on the French side. Anyway I try contact post office. Best regards Thomas Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted June 16, 2015 Author Report Posted June 16, 2015 The postal service nowadays does not give a damn about non registered letters. For their less honest employees, the lack of trackability even means open season... I had no answer from the French Mail Service. Quote
Brian Posted June 16, 2015 Report Posted June 16, 2015 Sorry to see we aren't the only ones here with postal problems. The difference is that we basically don't have one. Busy going bankrupt, and I am still waiting on parcels from January. Hopefully yours is just delayed and will be found and forwarded. In the meantime we will keep a lookout for a replacement. Try adding it to the Wanted section referring to this thread. Brian Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted June 16, 2015 Author Report Posted June 16, 2015 Cheers Brian. I think it is a sad fact that many postal services neglect unregistered letters and parcel to push people towards paying more for registration. I have had this problem with French, English and German postal services. Speaking of the UK, posting antique weapons can be such a hassle and a cost, that I think it is sometimes simpler to board a Eurostar and collect the sword myself. In France, we are "very lucky", the Poste will never go bankrupt, because it is funded by tax payers' money... Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted June 27, 2015 Author Report Posted June 27, 2015 The swordsmith did a pretty good job of adapting the shin gunto lock on the kyu gunto. Costed me a pretty penny, buth the sword is now whole and fixed. Quote
Stephen Posted June 27, 2015 Report Posted June 27, 2015 Id never ship such a item in a letter best to pay extra and use a small box, Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted June 29, 2015 Author Report Posted June 29, 2015 Stupidity has a price. I my case, including the cost of the spare part and the swordsmith, around 225 euros. Quote
Dr Fox Posted June 29, 2015 Report Posted June 29, 2015 Hi I am sorry I sat by here, as I thought help was at hand. I, and Im sure others on here, could have saved you more expense. I know I have all spare sorts for gunto, and that spring is one of them. Regards. Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted June 29, 2015 Author Report Posted June 29, 2015 Well, the job is done now and the sword is actually better than it was before, because the swordsmith did a general check-up and fixed a few minor issues. It was a bit costly but woth it. 1 Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted September 16, 2015 Report Posted September 16, 2015 Lock was returned to me and shipped again and Thibault has now recived it. Frence postal service was the issue. 2 Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted September 23, 2015 Author Report Posted September 23, 2015 Yes, and thank you so much Thomas.I now have to try it on the sword. Here is the story: I provided Thomas with my professional address, without the name of the company because I am also personally registered on this professional address. Apparently, some French postmen, when provided with a professional address with the name of a person instead of the name of the company, do not wonder whether the person in question works on the premises of the company and do not bother to try to deliver the letter. My firm recently moved to a new headquarters and we never had this kind of issue in the previous district. We moved to the paradise of stupid and lazy postmen! Quote
