Marius Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 Gentlemen, I have come across pictures of a rather strange looking nakago. No, I don't mean the carving of Fudo Myo-O, but the patina above it. The surface looks as if molten. What do you think is it? I am wary of anything that seems irregular in a nakago and this here is a bit strange.. Quote
Brian Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 O-suriage and machi okuri, and then the new portion repatinated by the smith that did it? Don't think they leave that area bright steel but not sure. That horimono sure is odd too. Brian Quote
seattle1 Posted October 29, 2014 Report Posted October 29, 2014 Hello: I would guess that the blade was in salt water for awhile, or perhaps in a very salty atmosphere for quite awhile. Arnold F. Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted October 30, 2014 Report Posted October 30, 2014 The "molten" area is typical for a long time of rust pitting in water. Indeed salt water or a salty atmosphere might be correct. Quote
cabowen Posted October 30, 2014 Report Posted October 30, 2014 Could also be from a poorly done repatination.... Quote
